United Utilities has undertaken research over the last ten years to develop the Enzymic Hydrolysis process. This entails using naturally occuring enzymes and creating optimal conditions for them. The process provides tanks that are confgured in series and in which the processes of hydrolysis, acetogenesis and methanogenesis take place prior to the materials going into a conventional primary digester. The process can assist sludge reduction, ensure cake quality as well as enhanced biogas production. Further technical detail is available at www.enzymichydrolysis.com Fourteen full-scale plants have been built in the UK to date.
