Geoturism is a new segment of travel tourism defined by the TIA (Travel Industry Association of America). It represents a new segment of nature tourism promoting adventure, sports, culture, ecology and landscape observation and environmental education. In Silva & Perinotto,2008 : “Geoturism is a segment of tourism which centres around geologic features, landscapes origin and formation".

In 2008, IUGS (International Union of Geological Society) and UNESCO established the first Global Net Geoparks.  Directives used to define a geosite are:
- A site that contains an interesting physical characteristic (lithologic, landscape process,etc.);
- A site of local, regional or global geological interest;
- Possibilities to develop the site in terms of learn information;
- Surrounding areas will promote development of activities (cultural, ecologic) related to the geosite;
- Reasonable local infra structure (roads, hotels, human resources, etc.)

Now, there are 52 geoparks around the world distributed in 17 countries by UNESCO (In:http://www.unesco.org/science/earth/geopar/list.shtml#Z). There are 31 geoparks in Europe, 20 geoparks in Asia and just 1 in South America (Geopark Araripe, Ceará, Brazil: http://www.geoparkararipe.org).
In Brazil, there are intentions to promote the country's geological heritage, as well as to introduce conservation activities. Such activity considers the geodiversity (the diversity of geological features of an area) as its principal attraction.

The final product will be an illustrated map of geosites containing technical descriptions and a thematic guideline about the local tourism resources and options:
