Abstract

The lower water quality of many urban rivers and streams which cross big cities are now a testimony of the environmental impact of the unplanned urban expansion. The urban streams like Pirajuçara have been showing continually repulsive odor and aspect, mainly at summer season when those streams show also the occurrence of flooding events (see Figure 1).  Urban water quality evaluation by physical-chemical methods represents an instantaneous knowledge of the water conditions, only when the measurements are made. These limitations become higher when the surface water is a lotic system, a stream or a river, where the water is continuously renewed in each point. The use of sediment analysis and adsorbent materials for water quality monitoring will represent advantage by offering information of environmental effect of soluble contaminant discharge with the capability to reflect a condition not more existing at the moment of the verification. The use of diatomite spheres in water quality monitoring process provide important information of urban surface water diagnosis, about the presence of soluble toxic metals, water eutrophication and the toxic condition of the water which cross big cities. The project can also provide addition information for water quality measurements of similar urban surface water, with dense pollution, flooding events, located in big cities, as Pirajuçara urban stream located in metropolitan area of Sao Paulo.
