Failure Modes of Metalic Mains

Pipes fail when some portion of the pipe is no longer strong enough to withstand the stress applied to it. Cast iron pipes are by far the most prone to failure. Cast iron corrodes, is brittle and prone to cracking, and generally employs bell and spigot joints that can lose their sealing integrity. Ductile iron pipes are less brittle, and are capable of supporting large leaks for long periods of time without failing. Welded steel pipes fail primarily through corrosion pitting, leading to leaks of gradually increasing size, particularly along the welds where material differences encourage
corrosion.
