Brief Abstract - Cities of the Future: Public and Private Sector Perspectives on Sustainable Cities

As urban water professionals, policy makers and political leaders develop integrated water management approaches that creat harmony between urban forms and natural systems, the business community will be changed to develop new products and services that help to make cities efficient and environmentally sustainable. The seminar centres on the relationship between advances in urban sustainability and technology development in the private sector. Are corporate research and development efforts focused on new paradigms for urban water management or improving the efficiency and effectiveness of existing system components? How can growing cities in emerging economies utilise the business sector to minimise the use of scarce natural resources and increase the coverage of water and sanitation to all of their citizens? Participants at this seminar heard from both public and private sector leaders who are dedicated to the creation of sustainable future cities.

The seminar focused on the intersection of technology development in the industrial sector and the efforts of communities to create sustainable urban communities in a wide range of economic and environmental circumstances. Means of transitioning from improvements to the status quo towards entirely new urban systems that are creasingly flexible and adaptive were discussed.
